Illinois EPA Announces $10 Million Funding Opportunity for Third Round of Lead Service Line Inventory Grant Program

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) Director John J. Kim today announced a third funding opportunity of $10 million to assist communities in meeting the requirements outlined in the Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act (LSLRN Act). The Lead Service Line Inventory (LSLI) Grant Program offers grants to local government units ranging from $20,000 - $50,000 to fund the creation of a final lead service line inventory. The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) has been posted to the Illinois EPA website. Read More

Coach Vince Lombardi  said “it’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” 

When I get discouraged I like to think about Norman Vincent Peale, author of The Power of Positive Thinking. The book was first thrown into the trash can by the author, Norman Vincent Peale, who was told by a publisher that his book wasn’t worth publishing. Being discouraged, he told his wife not to retrieve it from the can.

Instead she carried the manuscript, still in the basket, to another publisher, who immediately published it.

Don’t Get Cuffed, Unless You Want To

I started my career at the Daily Herald as a police reporter. I got to learn the ebb and flow of crime with the seasons.

In winter, when even stupid criminals knew better to stick to themselves than burglarize homes, get into fights, rob banks and do other things that would require wearing bulky coats, leaving telltale footprints and driving getaway cars in snow, the crime rate dipped considerably.

It was summer when it seemed all bets were off. The heat seems to bring out the worst in people.

So imagine my surprise when I just received an email about “cuffing season” coming up. It would seem that the triple-digit heat we just endured would have been prime cuffing season. But apparently it is yet to come. Read More

Leslie Rodman’s solid all-around performance helped the Bethany-Findlay volleyball team earn its first victory of the season. Rodman finished with four kills, three service aces and one block as the Mustangs downed Cowden-Herrick 13-15,15-2, 15-1. Keri Newman had two kills, Betsy Rowe recorded five aces and Rebecca Brumleve added one block for the Mustangs who evened their record 1-1. 

Sullivan-Bethany recorded a win in football over Normal U 18-15.

Lake Shelbyville Youth Deer Hunt Applications Available

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville will hold the 12th Annual Youth Firearm Deer Hunt on October 7 and 8, 2023. To apply for the hunt, youth applicants must be less than 18 years old on October 7, 2023 and be accompanied by an adult. Applications must be received by 8:00 a.m. on September 8, 2023. Matter of Balance Program to be Held at ETML

A Matter of Balance program will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 3 through 26 from 9 to 11 am at the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library in Sullivan. Many older adults experience concerns about falling and restrict their activities. A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. The program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. Participants will learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home and exercise to increase strength and balance. Those who should attend is anyone concerned about falls, anyone interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength, anyone who has fallen in the past and anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns. A $20 donation is requested for the program. Light snacks and refreshments are provided. Class size is limited. To register contact Carol Logan at 217-428-3458 ext. 231.

Lake Land College Community Education Program Provides Classes and Events for Local Community Members

Lake Land College is excited to invest in the strength and development of its local communities with a rebuilt Community Education Program and new class offerings.

Lake Land Community Education offers classes in knitting and food sanitation. The knitting course is designed for beginners and will be held from 6-8 p.m. on September 13, 20 and 27. The course costs $75, which includes all three class sessions and knitting supplies. The three class sessions will all be held in room 102 of Lake Land’s Workforce Development Center. Read More

Red Cross Offers Extreme Heat Safety Tips

Extreme heat is expected throughout much of the Illinois region this week and it is important to take action and be prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones. The Red Cross offers the following reminders that help us stay safe when the temperatures soar.

1. Hot cars can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees.

SBL Hospice Binga Set for September 7

The Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation will host its annual SBL Hospice Binga on Thursday, September 7, at the Mattoon Eagles Club, 1917 Oak Avenue. Net proceeds from this event will support the SBL Hospice House Endowment.

The new Hospice House, opening later this year, is a beautiful 14,470 square-foot facility complete with eight private suites, a family gathering space, beautiful landscaping and more to help make patients’ last days as comfortable as possible. Donations will directly impact people throughout East Central and Southern Illinois by helping those with limited resources pay for their stay at the Hospice House. Read More

I try to be a positive force both in this column and my workaday life, so I was surprised to find this email from Mark Taylor in my inbox:

“Look at this headline with a triple negative: ‘Harder to avoid virus when tests aren’t free?’ I think it means, ‘Tests are no longer free, so the virus is making a comeback.’ I see now that this article is from The Washington Post, so maybe your editors simply adopted their headline along with the story.”

I wasn’t on the debate team in high school, because I would have been that kid who was a deer in the headlights, drooling instead of counterpunching, but I do like a good, reasonable, respectful discussion these days. Read More

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
