Leaders from Eastern Illinois University and Lake Land College signed an agreement today that will provide students who have paused their college education a unique pathway for returning to the classroom. In this collaborative program, students who meet the criteria will have the opportunity to complete an associate degree at Lake Land College and then transfer to EIU to complete a bachelor’s degree. “Is the expression ‘going down a rabbit hole’ appearing more frequently these days?” reader Cliff Darnall asked.
“I was asked what the expression meant a couple of years ago by an English learner (aren’t we all still to some extent?), and I stumbled to give an adequate explanation. Since then, I have noticed ‘rabbit hole’ more and more in the media, including in your March 11 column and even as the title of a new streaming series.”
Cliff, etymology is all about going down rabbit holes, and there is nothing I love more than to find myself in a warren of word origin stories.
I’d always assumed the phrase has something to do with “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

25 Years Ago This Week
Sullivan native R. Eden Martin earned the Illinois State Historical Society’s top honor for books for his publication of Ivory and Rose, A Year’s Courtship: The Correspondence of Ivory J. Martin and Rose Eden, Sullivan, Illinois, 1885-86.
Ground was broken for Moultrie County’s first house to be built by the county’s Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Blair Alexander of Sullivan turned the first shovel of dirt on the lot in the Bragg subdivision at the southwest edge of Sullivan where the home she and her daughter, Brianne, 11, hoped to move in by Thanksgiving was being built. The chapter raised more than $10,000 for the construction of the first home with an addition $5,000 raised during a celebrity auction. Read More

Adult Prom 2023
An adult prom was held on Saturday, April 8 at the Sullivan American Legion. The organizing committee was made up of Josh and April Dinger, Rob and Megan Martz, and Stephanie Helmuth. Everyone came dressed in their best for a night of dancing, fundraising, and fun. There was a catered formal dinner and danced the night away with music provided by a DJ.
There were nominations for king and queen with a court of 6 guys and 6 gals. The prom court raised over $2,000 for the event. This year’s king raising the most funds was Guy Harminson, and the queen raising the most funds Sarah Harminson. Guy and Sarah Harmison reside in Sullivan and became part of the Down Syndrome community with the birth of their daughter Indie Rose in August 2022.
The total amount raised was $4,594.37. All proceeds went to the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network for Down Syndrome Awareness and Advocacy.

Windsor Jr./Sr. is pleased to announce their March Students of the Month, Elijah Robinson and Addilyn Bly.
Elijah Robinson is the son of Jonathan and Amanda Robinson. He is currently a sophomore in high school. In his free time, he enjoys playing basketball. He plans to become an electrician after he graduates from high school.
Addilyn Bly is the daughter of Dereck and Daphney Bly. She is currently in 8th grade and is involved in volleyball, cheerleading, and is her class secretary. She enjoys crocheting and playing volleyball in her free time. She plans to one day become a pilot.

April is here and brings many changes. The temperature. The clock. Even our clothing. Why not add one more change to the list? Get out your calendars and pick a night for a “family night in” to relax and spend time together.
What children really want is more time with friends and family. What gets in the way? Children tell us that their family schedules are controlled by sports, school activities, homework and their parents’ work.A “family night in” doesn’t have to be a major event. In fact, simple things are often the most fun and relaxing. Here are some ideas to get you thinking about your April family night in.
· Become birdwatchers. Check out books websites, or apps on birds. Try to identify birds by their appearance or birdcalls. Get out the binoculars and see how many different birds you can find. Read More

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

The Illinois Department of Transportation is teaming up with the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to promote Distracted Driving Awareness Month, reminding drivers to “Drop it and Drive.” Throughout April, law enforcement officers will work together to enforce texting and distracted-driving laws. Illinois Deer Donation Program Donates 33,656 Meals to Area Families

With community support, the Illinois Deer Donation Program had a successful first season. During the 2022 season, 8,414 pounds of donated venison were processed by local meat processors. The meat was donated to 37 food pantries, resulting in 33,656 meals to area families.
In response to rising food and meat prices and the challenges food pantries have in obtaining meat, University of Illinois Extension, along with key partners, launched the Illinois Deer Donation Program in 2022. Read More
