Each year, all Illinois school districts are required to have an external audit conducted.  This process was completed this summer with the results being shared at our most recent school board meeting.
Once again, I am pleased to report that there were no significant findings that need to be addressed as a result of our annual audit.  There were a number of highlights that I would like to share.
Our per capita tuition charge, essentially how much money is spent to educate each student, decreased by about $140 this school year.  This was somewhat influenced by an increase in enrollment of approximately forty students.  Read More

Ag in the Classroom Continues to Grow

The Bee Lesson taught by Naylor was in conjunction with a pollinator planting with Sullivan Middle School children sponsored by Pheasants Forever at Coyote Cabins in rural Sullivan.

Stephanie Naylor has been named the new Ag In the Classroom Coordinator for the Moultrie County Soil and Water Conservation District. Stephanie took over the position previously held by Erica Lehman.
Erica worked for the district for the last four years and made great strides with the program bringing Ag in the Classroom to all the classrooms in Moultrie County. Her vast knowledge of agriculture also helped the students learn that Moultrie County is more than corn and beans. Sue Yarnell held the position before Lehman and was instrumental from the beginning to getting the program up and running. Read More

Prairie Winds Perform Sunday

On Sunday, November 3 the Prairie Winds of Sullivan will present a public performance as they begin their 35th year with an Anniversary Show at the United Methodist Church of Sullivan beginning at 2:00 p.m.
The Prairie Winds is a local volunteer group that originally began with eight singers under the direction of Virginia Darnell. They now have expanded to 19 singers and musicians with Debbie Seelhoefer directing. Read More

Area Resident Wins Prize at Quilt Show

A quilt created by Sandy Broering of Sullivan has won a top award in the quilt contest at The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show (formerly Quilt Expo) in Madison, Wisconsin.
For the fourth year in a row, over 20,000 quilt lovers attended The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show, held Sept. 5-7 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show is presented by Wisconsin Public Television and Nancy Zieman Productions.
Broering’s quilt “Rings of Posies” won honorable mention in Category 4 (Machine Quilted Bed Sized Appliquéd). Read More

25 Years Ago This Week

Local elevators report a strong harvest is just about finished. RR grabbed a photo of Allen Eaton unloading a truck at the Sullivan Grain Co.. Gary Smith at Moultrie Grain Assn’s Lovington elevator estimated that the harvest was 80 percent finished, with strong yields of 200-plus bushels of corn per acre and 60 bushels of soybeans per acre.
The Bethany High School Fillies came away with a hard fought victory over Deland-Weldon for the team’s second win of the year. Teri Zimmer scored three straight points including two aces to give the Fillies the lead, Leslie Patient added three aces and ten kills for the night.
Terry Klingel shot a hole-in-one at the Sullivan Country Club using a five-wood on the 17th hole, par-3 197 yards. His first hole-in-one was witnessed by Vernon Perrine, Ray Duncan and Rick Steward. Three others have shot a hole-in-one in the last few weeks. Bud Grant his a 128-yard hole-in one, Sullivan High School senior Adam Uhlarik shot a hole-in-one during team practice and Han daily used a five-wood to hit her hole-in-one on the same fourth hole. Shimkus Sending Staff to Sullivan

25 Years Ago This Week

The Sullivan Sixth Grade Singers participated in a 50’s Sock Hop. With the girls in their poodle skirts and boys in their rolled up white t-shirts, a photo shows Dana Howell, Amanda Martin, Lindsey Hagan, Rachael Howard, Tyson Grooms, Ryan Crawford and Adam Yoder.
Sherry E Harris of Sullivan received an honorable mention ribbon for her art exhibit “The Lion Sleeps” at the 40th Annual Paris Art Exhibit. Maggie McClellan, an artist and teacher firm Miami Florida, presented the awards and gave a gallery talk.
Mr. and Mrs. W. Scott Blomeley were given a surprise 40th anniversary luncheon at The Inn at Eagle Creek. The luncheon was hosted by their children, Mrs. Betty Jane (BJ) Boyer, Mrs. Kathy Cantrall, Cyndi Selby and Scott H. Blomeley. Over 50 guests attended the luncheon including Mrs. Blomeley’s matron of honor and an usher from their wedding in 1954.
The Gingerbread House in Windsor (formerly Jimmy’s) is newly remodeled and serving “made from scratch” meals. They feature homemade bread, cinnamon rolls and pies. Read More

Sullivan Art Club Hosts Workshop Saturday

Sullivan Art Club’s final art workshop for it’s 2019 season will be held on Saturday, October 19 at the St. Columcille Church hall located on the east end of the church at the corner of West Jackson and McClellan Streets.
There is a dedicated entrance to the hall adjacent to the parking lot. The workshop will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with an hour break for lunch. Participants may bring a sack lunch or dine at one of the area restaurants. Read More

“Together, We Give Back to School”

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation. Pictured (left to right) are Cameron Martin, Taylor Lilly, James Martin, Marla Martin and Angela McRill following the July 27 delivery.
