The arrival of summer means that Eastern Illinois University will again be providing a variety of camps in which community youth may get involved. The camps are tailored for the age ranges of 10 to 18 and include a LEGO and Robotics Camp and a Fashion & Design Day Camp. There are also two residential camps specifically for high school students— Fashion, Design & Merchandising and Summer Art Camp.

Sugar, the vibrant musical comedy based on the 1959 hit film “Some Like It Hot”, will open soon at Sullivan’s Little Theatre-On the Square. Set in 1931 Chicago, the height of the gangster era, this second show of the Little Theatre season focuses on two unemployed musicians, Jerry and Joe, who witness the St. Valentine’s Massacre.
Steven Ray Osborn has been nominated for the Smithsonian Institution Museum of the American Indian Art and Cultural Achievement Award for 1994. Osborn, a 1979 graduate of Bethany High School, is a former U.S. Army sergeant and professional kick-boxing champion. He is registered as Steven Ray Steyawa Osborn member No. 118467 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.

Multiple Sullivan FFA Honors at State Convention

Members of the Sullivan FFA chapter attended the 91st annual Illinois State FFA Convention June 11-13 along with more than 5,000 other FFA members, advisors, and guests. Chapter delegates included Paiten Coy, Zane Gardner, Dmitiri Tull, John Voyles, and Natalie Voyles.
“Elevate” was the theme of the three-day event which recognizes achievements of Illinois FFA members, elects the major state officer team, and celebrates agriculture. Read More

Stew-Stras Education Foundation Provides Funds to Build a School Garden

As part of a generous grant from the Stew-Stras Education Foundation, kindergarten students and their teachers worked together the last two weeks of school to build a school garden. The “kindness garden” is located along the south end of the school. It features four raised bed cedar box gardens, with a mulch walking path between each garden box. All materials were purchased using grant funds as well as other building & grounds materials around the school.
The spring rains delayed the project a bit from the original time frame planned, so in the last week and a half of the school year, the project really came together with some teamwork and cooperation. Read More

McDonald’s Reopens
Mayor Richard Glazebrook and Sullivan McDonald’s owner Angie Matlock gather with a grand reopening crowd June 12 cutting the ribbon officially reopening the restaurant following a seven-week store rebuild. A large crowd attended VIP preopening activities which included flag raising by Rick Matthews, ribbon cutting by Sullivan mayor and public officials plus free breakfast and drinks until 10 a.m. The new store opened to the public at 11 a.m. with drawings and frisbee giveaways for children 12 and under. Specials continue through June 26 as part of the reopening celebration.
Findlay American Legion Falls Short of Goal Again

The Findlay American Legion Auxiliary hosted an American Red Cross blood drive June 11. Twenty-four potential donors answered the call to donate a pint of blood, but only 17 productive pints were collected.
Christina Frain was a first time donor, and Ron McClain reached a milestone of nine gallons. Fred and Chris Tippit appreciated everyone who took the time to come out and give the Gift of Life in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary.
The next blood drive will be 2-6 p.m. August 6 at the American Legion.

Beginning Jan 1, 1996, Bethany village employees who are involved in an automobile accident will be required to undergo alcohol testing by the village according to utilities manager Mike Collins. Testing would take place within two hours of the accident, and those tested must have a blood alcohol content of less than 0.04.
Moultrie County board members held their first meeting in their newly remodeled board room on the second floor of the courthouse. With the new desk board members are able to face visitors. Members of the board are Kerry Pate, Mick Braden, Joe Bone, Orris Drew, Blaine Erhardt, Lynn Bickers, Steve Mayberry, Sally Foley and Tim Singer. Read More
