Importance of the US Flag

I helped raise the flag at the newly remodeled McDonald’s today. It brought to mind the importance of our US Flag. We all see them flying throughout the US in our travels, but it seems a lot of us take our flag for granted. How many times have we seen a torn and tattered flag just hanging on by a thread to an old pole? No one has the time or effort to care for it properly. How many times have we seen it at half-mast and not really cared to find out why? It is a great responsibility to have a flag pole and care for our flag. If you plan to have a flag, care for it properly. A lot of people have died protecting our freedom, and it’s our Flag that represents this freedom, we all enjoy.
In recent years our Presidents and Governors have changed the way our flag is to be displayed. My understanding is if the President and Governor order the flag to be lowered on all State and Federal properties, then the State and federal funded facilities must all comply. Recent flag lowering was for a president’s wife who passed, the victims of the Virginia Beach shooting, a US Army Corporal from Sterling, Illinois, and a firefighter from Christopher, Illinois.
The statement from Central Management Services explains that all entities covered by the Illinois Flag Display act lower their flag to half-mast for the time prescribed. Read More

Dennis Hutchings Nominated IRTA Unit Honoree

The Moultrie County Retired Teachers Association met June 5 at First United Methodist Church in Sullivan. President Sue Yarnell presided and introduced Jim Bachman, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association Executive Director.
Bachman’s presentation included explanations of the recent Illinois legislation regarding retired teachers and their pensions.
Addison Graham, a recent graduate of Sullivan High School, was present to thank the Moultrie County Retired Teachers for the scholarship he received. He was chosen for his intentions to major in education this fall. He also discussed how he decided to seek education as his future career. Read More

Junefest in Lovington was packed with good food and entertainment for the annual fish fry with the Lovington Community Club ending the evening with fireworks. Among the entertainers were the Collage of Faith singers l-r: Dennis Garmon of Lovington, Lonnie Connor of Decatur, Bobbi Welch of Arcola, Shari Schable of Atwood, Monica Connor of Decatur and Bob Crossman of Arthur.

Petting Zoo at Senior Services

Petting Zoo at Senior Services
Mid-Illinois Senior Services held a petting zoo last week. Mammals from Scovill Zoo came to visit the seniors and several local children. The six-day-old goats were a favorite of most as well as the 11-inch American alligator.

Our increasingly complex world became a little more complex as the phone numbers get longer at the end of June. Local calls will require all seven digits for completion, and long distance calls within the 217 area code will require 11 digits (the customary “1” or “0” followed by the 217 area code and the number). The state-of-the-art, computerized equipment is to be in service on June 28.
Lovington High School won second place in the annual high school chemistry contest held recently at Eastern Illinois University. Greg Davis was the fourth place individual winner, and the other team members are Jimmy Minor and Jeremy Tarr. Linda Casteel is Lovington’s chemistry teacher.
J.R. Craig and wife Cathrine got to watch as their new home was maneuvered into its new location in Sullivan. The house was formerly a tenant farm residence in rural Sullivan that the couple purchased from Lola Horn.

Agent Houser Makes Team

Representative Elizabeth Houser of Sullivan has earned a position on the insurance group’s distinguished All American team.
Houser is among a select group of top Country Financial agency managers and financial representatives who qualified for the award. Country Financial has more than 2,000 agency managers and financial representatives in 17 states. Houser ended 2018 ranked #121.

WHS Class of 2020 Hosts Harvest 5K

Mobile Unit Coming to Sullivan Library

Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library in Sullivan, is offering drivers a chance to renew their driver’s license or vehicle registration renewal sticker, obtain a duplicate or corrected license, or obtain an Illinois identification card. White’s mobile unit will be available at the library located at 2 West Water in Sullivan 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 20. Read More
