FCCLA State Leadership Conference

Jessica Renfro, a senior at Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond High School, attended the FCCLA State Leadership Conference.
She competed in the “Chapter in Review Portfolio” Senior Category and received a silver medal. Her project was named “Most Outstanding” in the category and earned a National Delegate title. Jessica served as a voting delegate at the conference and was one of 22 students chosen to participate in a special flag ceremony during the Friday night general session. Ginger Voegel, ALAH FCCLA adviser and her daughter Sarina Voegel, also represented ALAH FCCLA at the conference. Read More

25 Years Ago This Week
Tom Wopat, former star of The Dukes of Hazzard and a top-notch country singer, will headline Sullivan’s 1994 Festival of Stars. Wopat’s concert will be Saturday, May 21 on the main stage on the Sullivan Square.
Organizers are gearing up for their annual Appalachian Project. Orris and Athelene Drew and Lee and Delores Hopper are now coordinating the project. Chick and Ilene Morgan who have volunteered their time for the past 17 years are taking a break until their health improves. They take 20 or more trucks loaded with clothes, toys and small household items to the families in Appalachia.
Ron and Angela Coy of Sullivan have announced the engagement of their daughter, Misha, to Kris Hutchings, son of Dennis and Mary Hutchings of Sullivan. A July 23 wedding is being planned.
Linda Scheer of Sullivan won honorable mention in the Category II amateur division in the 15th annual Lake Land College Foundation Photography Show. Her win was for a photo entitled “Pelican Landing”. Read More
Gospel Quartet in Concert

Dick Nelson of the Lovington Area Development Committee reported that the committee had applied for the Governor’s Hometown Award. Representatives from the governor’s office and city officials will meet with members of the LADC to evaluate the application.
Knighting was one of the events held as part of the annual Medieval Fair held in the Sullivan Middle School gym. Trumpets were played by Chester Reeder, Alan Knobloch and Sally Mundy. Amanda Corzine and Jennifer Auten told a story of Eleanor of Aquitane who was known for ruling two lands. Melissa Davis, Josie Harris, Chelsey Peters and Mary Reed were the jesters who amused the king and queen. Two kings and two queens ruled the gym each hour. Queens: Krista Boyce and Crystal Norton, first hour; April Collins and April Kimery, second hour; Kari Taylor and Georgine Nunn, third hour. Kings: Robert Cole and Corey Parks, first hour; Dylan Dudley and Dusty Brownlee, second hour; Jon Livergood and Andy Maxedon, third hour. Meaning of the Last Supper of Jesus with His Disciples…

April 18 this year will be the sixth reenactment that Sullivan First United Methodist Church has performed a Passover event during Holy Week. Perhaps some reflection is in order on why this event is so important in life of Christians today.
The first record in our Bible of this remarkable supper is in Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Church in Corinth. All four Gospels later mention this powerful event.
Maundy Thursday refers to a “mandate” or “commandment” and is the fifth day of Holy Week. The day is sometime referred to as Holy Thursday in our United Methodist tradition.
Maundy refers to the “commandment” in the Gospel of John when Jesus gives the disciples a new commandment to “love one another as I have loved you.” This book does not include the Institution of Holy Communion, but it does tell of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. Read More
