Gallery to close doors after eleven years

Cathrine Craig, owner of Cathrine’s Gallery, on November 18th announced plans to close the gallery’s doors after 11 years of operation. The gallery’s final retail day will be Saturday, December 21st.

College partnership offers more for graduates, after graduation

Lake Land College, a community college super-power, has partnered with Millikin University in a project to simplify transfer processes between schools. The partnership as stated by LLC, will allow all graduates whom completed their degree within the two-year term with full-time enrollment, to seamlessly transfer to Millikin University. Lake Land Students who wish to transfer to Millikin after graduation will also be set up with a learning plan to keep the student on track and will receive automatic acceptance into Millikin baccalaureate degree program upon a successful completion of Associates in Arts,  Associates in Science, Associates in Engineering Science or Associates in Applied Science with a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Wrapping paper drive

One of the hardest parts about the Christmas season is the wrapping paper and choosing which one to use each year. For some, wrapping paper changes per gift or per person, while others manage to get away with foldable bags and tissue paper, the wrappings are necessary. Starting on November 18th, the High School Student Council has been hosting a wrapping paper drive, which will end on December 3rd. Labeled as a class competition for points, any and all types of wrapping paper will be accepted.

Hospital Foundation shines a light this holiday season

HSHS St. Mary’s Foundation is set to host its annual Star Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5. Community members are invited to honor or memorialize a loved one by purchasing a light on the hospital’s star with each light symbolizing a meaningful tribute. Students and classrooms invited to compete in Illinois EPA contests

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is inviting fifth and sixth grade writers and artists from around Illinois to participate in this year’s Poster, Poetry, and Prose Contest. The 2025 theme How Can You Slash Your Trash?, invites students to think creatively about haow to reduce the amount of waste they produce. This could include buying fewer single-use products, diverting food waste, repairing broken items instead of replacing or buying new, and recycling responsibly.

Red Cross Volunteers Assist 8 People Impacted by 3 Home Fires in the Past Week

Thanksgiving and the day before are the top two days in this country for the chance of a cooking fire to happen in someone’s home. Cooking causes an average of 158,400 home fires per year, which is 44% of all home fires in the United States. The American Red Cross offers safety steps everyone can follow if they will be preparing their family’s Thanksgiving feast.

I’m sure you’ve been anxiously awaiting my thoughts about the Eagle Pond duck dinner that Indian captive William Biggs described in his narrative about his travel through Moultrie County in 1788  I’ve spent some time pondering this. I first shared Bigg’s story with the readers of my “Kaskaskia Reflections” articles for the late Don Lewis’ short-lived Community Record newspaper twenty years ago. I’m still pondering it. It has kept me from worrying about really petty stuff.

Acro trial classes at Sullivan Dance Studio

The Sullivan Dance Studio is launching new free trial classes for flexibility and strength training. 

Starting on Tuesdays from 4:15-4:45pm for ages four to six, 5:15-5:45pm for ages two to three and a half, 6:45-7:15pm for ages five to eight and the teens class of 11+ taking place on Wednesdays from 6:45-7:15pm. 

There are limited spots for each class with limited days and times, to register for a spot in the class send ACRO TRIAL to the Dance Studio’s text line (217)909-9111.

Moultrie County Childcare Committee awards Proto-Tykes grant funds

The Moultrie County Childcare Committee recently announced the awarding of grant funds to Proto-Tykes, a well-established childcare provider in the community, to support the construction of a new facility. This expansion will allow Proto-Tykes to increase its capacity, providing additional childcare spots for local families and helping address the county’s growing demand for quality childcare services.
