Butterfly release ceremonies

News Progress Posted on May 13, 2026 by webmasterMay 12, 2026

•May 13, 2026•

HSHS Home Care invites community members to join them for butterfly release ceremonies at locations throughout central Illinois, including HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur, on Tuesday, May 19th at 5:30 p.m. in the Cancer Center Garden.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate and remember the life of a loved one who has passed. The ceremonies will include the reading of the names of those being honored in addition to the butterfly release. Valerie Engelbart, Bereavement Services Supervisor for HSHS Home Care, said, “These butterfly release ceremonies provide a special time for families in our communities to honor their loved ones. The butterfly represents the transformation of the spirit as our loved ones transition from this life. As we release butterflies together, we celebrate the lives that have touched our hearts and find comfort in our shared experiences of love and loss.”

A Look Back…5-13-2026

News Progress Posted on May 13, 2026 by webmasterMay 12, 2026

2016

Moultrie County Courthouse computer systems grew slower and older, prompting the County Board Building and Grounds committee to recommend an upgrade. County Clerk Georgia England reported Quality Network Solution (QNS) findings at the regular meeting. Slow access and crash problems prompted QNS to look further into the problems within the system. They discovered servers from 2001, 2003, and 2006 were in use beyond their capacity.

Those attending the No Job Left Behind session at Yoder’s Kitchen in Arthur learned the value of the Talent Management Pipeline. Guest speakers Vicky Haugen, executive director, and Kim Kuchenbrod, Workforce Development of Vermilion Advantage, presented the Talent Management Pipeline program. Several businesses were in attendance, including Hydro-Gear, Agri-Fab, GSI, IHI Turbo, Moultrie County Counseling Center, Masterbrand Cabinets, and several school officials and business teachers.

May is mental health awareness: alcohol

News Progress Posted on May 6, 2026 by webmasterMay 6, 2026

Community Outreach Coordinator Virginia Recovery Centers

After a long, stressful day, it’s tempting to reach for a drink. For many, that glass of wine or cocktail can feel like a fast track to unwinding, taking the edge off, or briefly quieting anxious thoughts. It’s a ritual that’s widely normalized (and even encouraged). But this May Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s worth taking a closer look at the connection between alcohol and emotional well-being (and why self-medicating with alcohol often backfires).

As Community Outreach Coordinator at Virginia Recovery Centers (an alcohol and drug rehab in Virginia), I’ve seen how many of those I’ve worked with didn’t set out to rely on alcohol to cope; it simply became the easiest and most accessible tool. While it may offer short-term relief, using alcohol to manage emotions tends to create more challenges over time than it resolves. Here’s what to keep in mind.

Self-medicating isn’t about weakness or lack of willpower. It’s about trying to feel better with the tools available. Many people turn to alcohol to cope with anxiety, depression, chronic stress, burnout, or unresolved emotional pain. Alcohol works quickly and can create a temporary sense of relaxation, reduce social inhibition, and numb uncomfortable feelings. For someone who feels overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted, that relief can feel significant (and even necessary). But that relief is short-lived.

Steps to prevent tick bites in warmer months

News Progress Posted on May 6, 2026 by webmasterMay 6, 2026

by Angela Hogan

Administrator - Moultrie County Health Department

As the weather warms, more people spend time outdoors working in the yard, walking trails, gardening, fishing, and enjoying local parks. That also means greater exposure to ticks. Due to an unusually warm and wet March, ticks are already quite active in central and east-central Illinois. Preventing tick exposure is an important part of health maintenance. Throughout the United States, ticks can carry a variety of diseases, some of which can cause chronic and severe illness. A few simple precautions can help protect you, your children, and your pets from this unnecessary risk.

Jonathan L. Lindley, Alamo Defender, Part 2
•May 6, 2026•

by Janet Roney

Last week, I left you with some questions. What was 22-year-old Jonathan L. Lindley, grandson of our first Moultrie pioneer John S. Whitley, doing at the Alamo in Texas in 1836? Wasn’t good old Moultrie County good enough for him? He was engaged to be married soon, so why did he go to the Alamo, knowing full well he probably was not going to survive? Let’s review some Whitley-Lindley family and early Texas history.
