No state funds forced the ALAH and School District teachers and other staff to look for other ways to pay for the tools they needed to continue to educate students, as well as cope with the rising costs of technological needs. With the advancements in technology and learning, schools’ funding needs were pressing.

The US Army Corps of Engineers and the Lake Volunteers Association hosted the 3rd Annual Loop Like Shelbyville Bike Ride. All rides started from the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center and included options for a 22-mile, 46-mile, or 65-mile ride. Proceeds from the ride benefited the Lake Volunteers Association.

MISS: on fleek in fashion and 2025 services

On Wednesday, April 22nd, the Mid Illinois Senior Services center in Sullivan held their annual ‘Spring Fling’ fashion show, highlighting some of the wardrobe selections from their Thrift Store located on the square. This year’s models were from Sullivan High School’s FCCLA program as well as the CEFS RSVP program. There was sass, class, and brass on the runway, from animal prints, florals and pastels, to fashionable shades, leathers, bling, and bomber jackets. The models strutted their stuff down the runway, showing off some of the finest fashion and accessories available for purchase at the thrift store, which supports MISS directly. 

MISS’ 2025’s year in review was equally impressive in reflecting how many seniors were served in the area, which reflects the ongoing support and wide variety of services offered for seniors. By no means all-inclusive, a quick snapshot of what MISS contributed to the senior population in 2025:

Remembering Who We Are…….107

Before I tell you about Moultrie County’s three Revolutionary War veterans buried here, I have more to share about the Lindley family…namely, Jonathan L. Lindley, the son of Samuel Washington Lindley, who was the only Illinois man to die at the Alamo in 1836.

Last week, I told you about pioneer Samuel Washington Lindley’s connections to the Revolution through his maternal grandfather, Dr. John Pyle, who shared British war plans with George Washington before the Battle of Yorktown, and his Quaker paternal grandfather, Thomas Lindley, who dropped dead on his front porch after witnessing his family fighting each other at the Battle of Lindley’s Mill in North Carolina in 1781.

David Bowers spent the better part of his life in Lovington, reaching out to touch someone. Even though he retired from family-owned Moultrie Independent Telephone Company at the end of March, he wasn’t going to stop being involved. “When you live a full life, life is fulfilling,” Bowers said, noting his retirement as vice president and plant supervisor gave him time to concentrate on other community needs.

Country Financial Representative Elizabeth Houser of Sullivan earned a position on the Insurance group’s Distinguished All-American team. Houser was among a select group of top Country Financial agency managers and financial representatives who qualified for the award.

35th Annual Arthur Quilt Show April 30 – May 2

Quilt enthusiasts from across the region are invited to attend the Annual Arthur Amish Country Quilt Show, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, April 30th through May 2nd, at the Otto Center, located one-half mile south of Arthur at 2056 County Road 1800 East. The show will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $5. Now in its 35th year, the Arthur Quilt Show continues to draw entries and visitors from across Illinois and beyond, showcasing some of the finest handcrafted quilts, including many Amish-crafted ones.
