Recent Obituaries: Joseph (Joe) Russell

News Progress Posted on September 26, 2025 by webmasterSeptember 26, 2025

Joseph (Joe) Eugene Russell, 76 of Sullivan passed away peacefully at 8:05am on September 25, 2025 at Eastview Terrace, Sullivan.

Services start at 6:00 p.m. with visitation being held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Monday September 29, 2025 at the McMullin Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorials can be made to donors’ choice.

Joe was born March 8, 1949, in Decatur: the son of Lloyd Eugene Russell and Theresa Mae (Phillips) Beattie. He was a hard worker for Staleys in Decatur for thirty years. Joe was a huge fan of golfing, it was his number one hobby and he played a good game. He also enjoyed playing pool or doing difficult crossword to keep his mind sharp. He played cards almost everyday mostly solitaire. Watching old westerns was something he loved to do as well but nothing can compare to his family. The love he had for his Wife Jane of 51 years shined through onto their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Joe loved spending his time with his kids and grandkids making them laugh. He had a nickname for everyone and was quite clever when picking them. His laugh was silly, and contagious and will be missed dearly.

Joe is survived by sons, Wesley (Miko) Russell of Mattoon, Cole Russell of Bethany, Shane (Betty) Russell of Sulivan; daughters Tara (Jim) Underwood of Bethany, Jodi (Jason) Gotts of Bethany, April (Luke) Schumacher of Sullivan, Valerie (Heath) Huthinson of Bethany; 17 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; sister Anne (Andy) Burkette.

He was proceeded in death by his parents; Wife Jane; 1 brother Tom Russell.
