•December 27, 2017• By Jim Nowlan NP Guest Columnist The Illinois Monument at the Kennesaw Mountain Civil War battlefield north of Atlanta is a rather nondescript vertical block of marble. The monument stands atop Cheatham’s Hill, which the soldiers of the 85th and 125th Illinois Regiments almost but never quite reached on June 26, 1864. The marker commemorates the courage and cohesiveness of the men who came within 30 feet of the almost impregnable Confederate earthen parapets above the sharp rise. 25 Years Ago This Week City of Sullivan wrestled with health insurance issues reaching a compromise for employees and taxpayers. The council moved to increase the deductible from $200 to $500 for individuals and from $600 to $1500 for families. City treasurer Ann Short explained the action lowered the premium increase from $5000 to $800 per month. The city also reimburses employees for out-of-pocket expenses exceeding $500 and $1500. Sullivan paid $360,000 in health premiums in 1991. Sylvan Learning Center in Mattoon is reaching out to Moultrie County students. Findlay American Legion Auxiliary Misses Goal
•December 20, 2017• The Findlay American Legion Auxiliary missed their American Red Cross blood drive goal of 20 pints on Tuesday, Dec. 5. There were only 15 pints collected, but 18 people came out in support of the drive. Bob Hubbartt received a pin for donating 9 gallons. This year the Findlay American Legion Auxiliary has been responsible for collecting 119 pints of blood. We would like to thank all those donors who took the time to give the Gift of Life.
