Larry Phelps  Larry Hugh Phelps, 75, of Sullivan passed away Friday Feb. 12, 2016 in Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Feb. 20 in Keller Cemetery in Lovington with Pastor Al Rennert officiating. No visitation will be held. Arrangements are by McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Larry was born May 26, 1940 in Sullivan, a son of Hugh B. and Susan Evelyn Smith Phelps. He loved his dog Bubby very much. … Read More

Strong Fourth Generates Okaw Valley Win Over Knights

•February 17, 2016• Okaw Valley’s girls’ basketball team beat the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Knights 55-48 at home February 9. ALAH came out strong in the first quarter, boosted with a couple of Mycaela Miller three pointers, giving the Knights a 16-6 edge over the Lady Timberwolves. Second quarter action found the Okaw Valley team’s Paige Robinson responding with three three pointers as the Timberwolves edged the Knights 12-11 for the quarter. Bestselling Author Presents Samuels Lecture

•February 17, 2016• Robert D. Putnam, the Peter and Isabel Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University and bestselling author, will present the 2016 T.W. Samuels Lecture Wednesday, March 16. The lecture will take place in Kirkland Fine Arts Center on Millikin University’s campus beginning at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations are required. Regional Bee Next for Top County Speller

•February 17, 2016• Xenophobic was the word Reagan Crouse spelled correctly to win the Moultrie County Spelling Bee February 10. Crouse edged fellow Sullivan seventh grader Brett Johnson after his attempt at “Guttural”. Johnson is alternate when Crouse competes in the Regional Bee March 19 in Decatur. The County Spelling Bee was held at the Little Theatre in Sullivan,  with 4-8 grade students from Lovington and Sullivan schools competing, after each had proven themselves the best spellers at their respective schools. •February 17, 2016• By: Keegan Morfey ALAH FFA Reporter Zane Crist and Makenna Green, competed in the Section 17 Public Speaking CDE, held at Monticello High School Jan. 13. Crist competed in junior varsity prepared public speaking and Green competed in creed speaking. Crist’s speech was titled, “What’s Fowl about Proposition 2?” and dealt with the proposition that changes the amount of space that laying hens are required to have in commercial poultry production and why it is better for chickens to be in open cages. Redskin Seniors Deliver in Road Win Over Central A&M

•February 17, 2016• By Matt Kracht NP Sports Reporter Ty Molzen and Alec Ballinger put together a pair of all conference performances in Friday night’s 49-45 win over Moweaqua. Molzen led all scorers with 19 points and added 12 rebounds for a double double. Ballinger nailed a pair of threes before the half to swing momentum and finished with 16 points. Farm Bureau Holds Nutrient Loss Program

•February 17, 2016• The Moultrie County Farm Bureau and the Moultrie County Soil and Water Conservation District is holding a Nutrient Loss Reduction Workshop on Wednesday Feb. 24 at 9:30 am at the Sullivan United Methodist Church. •February 17, 2016• Amanda McClain, former Sullivan Okaw Valley track and field athlete recently competed at the Missouri Valley Conference indoor track and field competition in which her Illinois State University team finished fifth.
