Carol Fidroeff Carol Annette Horsman Fidroeff, 58, died in her home Saturday, January 23, 2016 with her husband Wil at her side. Carol, a very brave woman, decided to go home and forgo futile aggressive cancer treatment when it was discovered that she had advanced stage 4 cancer. Visitation will be today (Wednesday), January 27, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan.  A “scattering of the ashes” memorial service will be held Saturday, July 9, Carol’s birthday, at 6 p.m. at Wil and Sunny’s dome home located four miles east of Sullivan. Day Use Fees Change at Lake Shelbyville

•January 27, 2016• The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced that beginning Jan. 1 the recreation day use fees charged for boat launches and swimming beaches managed by USACE across the country changed to a simpler fee structure. The fee for a USACE annual pass as well as special use permits also changed. These fees were last changed in 2002. USACE conducted a national review of its fee structure earlier this year and determined that fee changes are needed to ensure USACE fees remain comparable and fair to those charged by other local providers for similar facilities and services. … Read More

Knights Outscore Timberwolves in Arthur

•January 27, 2016• Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond faced down Okaw Valley in a 59-37 win January 21 at Arthur. The Knights took a 13-8 first quarter advantage over the Timberwolves followed by a 16-9 second quarter that put the ALAH girls’ team up 29-17 at the half. Okaw Valley came out with a 11-10 third quarter but lost momentum with a 20-9 fourth quarter, resulting in the 59-37 Knight win. Sullivan Has Break Even Year Financially

•January 27, 2016• By Ariana Cherry For the News Progress Jim Russell of West and Company presented the Sullivan City Council with its annual audit at Monday night’s meeting. He stated that the city’s growth last year as a whole was marginal. From an asset/liability standpoint, it had a marginal $1.8 million dollar increase, and its net profit had a small decrease of $300,000. The city’s expenses saw a $1.6 million dollar increase (which equaled out to about 10%). Sullivan had about $17.6 million dollars in total revenue which came from city revenue and government funds. Leon Cochran G. Leon Cochran, 81, a resident of Trent Woods, N.C. died unexpectedly January 22, 2016 at home after battling a number of health issues. Born February 22, 1934 in Lovington, he attended the University of Illinois and graduated from Eastern Illinois State University in 1956 with a B.S. in Education. Moultrie is Among Counties IEMA is Reviewing Flood Damage

Final analysis expected by end of January •January 27, 2016• The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) is continuing to review damage information received from nearly three dozen counties impacted by severe storms and flooding in late December. IEMA asked counties to provide assessments of damages to homes as well as response and recovery costs incurred by units of local government. The deadline for submitting the information to the agency was Jan. 18. Thirty-four counties submitted local government cost information, while 14 counties submitted information on homes damaged. Kristy Dawson, Moultrie Food Pantry Director, reported that by Friday, January 22 the 3 Degree Guarantee had grown to $650.
