•December 9, 2015• All Moultrie County township and multi-township tax assessors will review updates on procedure requirements at the annual meeting December 29. As required by Section 200/9-15 of the Property Tax Code, Moultrie County Chief County Assessment Officer Cindy Kidwell advises that she will be holding her annual meeting with the Moultrie County township and multi-township assessors at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 29 in the Moultrie County Board Room on the second floor of the Moultrie County Courthouse at 10 South Main Street in Sullivan. •December 9, 2015• Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond varsity basketball traveled to Strasburg December 1 with the Stew-Stras team winning 41-26. The Knights first quarter kept pace with the Comets 7-9. In the second the Comets outscored ALAH 14-3, going into the half ahead 23-10. A 10-5 third quarter put the Stew-Stras team safely in the lead in spite of a 11-8 final quarter run by the Knights. ALAH made 10 of 29 shots from the field for 34 percent; two of six three point shots for 33 percent and four of nine free throws for 44 percent shooting averages. … Read More

Yost Gets Evaluation

•December 9, 2015• By Mike Brothers A motion to allow Michael Yost an evaluation to see whether he is fit for trial was granted by Judge Dan L. Flannell in Moultrie County court Monday. Yost, 41, is accused of the March 4 murder of Sheri L Randall in Sullivan. He was represented in court by public defender Bradford Rau, who presented the motion. “Our expert exam for fitness focuses on medical issues that could make Mr. Yost unfit for trial,” Rau told Judge Flannell. Wanda Bush Wanda Caroline Bush, 79, of Bethany, formerly of Effingham, went home to heaven at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday, December 1, 2015 in her home surrounded by her family. Honoring Wanda’s wishes, cremation will take place at Graceland/Fairlawn Crematory. There are no public services planned at this time. Wanda was born one of 14 children May 10, 1936 in Green County, Ark., the daughter of Marvin and Martha Bennett Crockett.  She married Ray Arnold Bush March 11, 1956 in Effingham. The 21 year old senior, a 1987 graduate of Sullivan High School and daughter of Harold and Marty Edwards of Sullivan, recently ended her one-semester term as commander of the university’s approximately 150-member cadet corps and is well on her way to becoming an Air Force jet pilot. Animal Control is Under Control

•December 9, 2015• By Stu D. Baker For the News Progress Moultrie County’s updated  Animal Control Ordinance will allow easier enforcement of violations. State’s Attorney Jeremy Richey presented the changes to the Public Health and Safety committee last week explaining the changes clarify what procedures the sheriff’s department must follow to issue citations. Sheriff Chris Sims explained that most of the calls of this nature involve neighbor disputes over dogs running at large. Citation violations still carry a $75 fine to the dog owner. •December 9, 2015• Sullivan’s Redskin basketball team traveled to St. Anthony in Effingham Dec 1 with the home team winning 52-39. It was even at the end of the first quarter with Sullivan and St. Anthony each with 11 points on the scoreboard. A  seven to five point run by the Bulldogs in the second quarter put St. Anthony ahead 18-16 at the half. The third quarter was golden for the Bulldogs as they scored 23 points to the Redskins seven.
