Growing up in Sullivan: Activities in the Park

News Progress Posted on February 11, 2015 by webmasterFebruary 11, 2015

February 11, 2015 by Jerry Ginther NP Columnist Wyman Park has been the venue of many Sullivan activities over the years. A few that I can remember are President Nixon’s campaign speech, the Buffalo Barbeque, the Kentucky Picnic and the Fourth of July fireworks display. Another big attraction was the carnival, Monarch Exposition Shows, which came to town for the week of the fourth and set up on the American Legion grounds at the south end of Wyman. Checking back in Moultrie County history, I discovered that Abraham Lincoln once gave a speech in Wyman Park in the area close … Read More

News Progress Posted on February 11, 2015 by webmasterFebruary 11, 2015

February 11, 2015 Two promotions and a new hire come to department by Ariana Cherry Arthur/Sullivan Reporter There’s a new sheriff in town…as well as a new second in command and deputy. On December 1, Brandon Beckwith became the newest Moultrie County deputy after Chris Sims was elected as the Moultrie County Sheriff. When previous Moultrie County Sheriff Jeff Thomas retired after 12 years of service (41 total in the department), Sims saw this as an opportunity to step up to serve the citizens of the county. After already serving as chief-deputy since 1994, he already had some ideas in … Read More

February 11, 2015 by Florence Hallford Lovington Reporter Last month, Valsalon owner Valerie Brumfield approached the Lovington Village Board about acquiring a permit to place a building on a residential property. “It’s getting expensive to do hair uptown using the storefront,” Brumfield said. She presented her information, including specs on the building and letters of approval from her neighbors, to the board for approval. Zoning board member Mike Castelli was present to give the zoning board’s approval and answer questions relating to the permit Brumfield was seeking. Under Zoning Ordinance 40-10-55, Castelli recommended approval for a nonconforming permit, which would … Read More

Understanding Illinois: Rauner Speech to Lawmakers Sets Right Tone

News Progress Posted on February 11, 2015 by webmasterFebruary 11, 2015

February 11, 2015 By Jim Nowlan Outside Columnist Calling for a new partnership in Illinois, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner set a constructive, cooperative, problem-solving tone in his maiden speech Wednesday to a legislature in which more than three-fifths of the members are Democrats. This positive approach will be critical in a pas de deux between chief executive and legislature that will have to continue unabated for the full four years of Rauner’s term, as the “Illinois Turnaround” the governor calls for will require years to set in motion. The new governor’s proposals were, as expected, business friendly and union critical, … Read More
