Improve Your Tree Identification Skills

•September 1, 2021• Master Gardener and Master Naturalist volunteers of Coles, Cumberland, Douglas, Moultrie, and Shelby Counties will host tree identification walks this fall. Sessions are free and open to the public. Participants can attend one or all three classes, and space is limited. University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator Sarah Vogel will lead the walks and discuss characteristics of trees and how to use them for identification. “Our volunteers are glad to offer these opportunities to the public,” says program coordinator Jenny Lee, “it’s a great way to discover more about the natural world around us.” … Read More

Moultrie County Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground for New Build

•September 1, 2021• by Crystal Reed NP Writer Moultrie County Habitat for Humanity broke ground on their 31st build Sunday. Tammy Martin and her sons Trey and Timothy were selected for this home. Tammy is a single mother and native of Sullivan. She has worked in the local high school cafeteria for seven years. Trey and Timothy are autistic. The boys enjoy watching Disney movies and spending time with their grandpa Ron Martin. Tammy has rented homes for many years, and home ownership appeared to be an unrealistic dream. … Read More

Windsor Native Releases First Book

He wrote the book his senior year of high school, he picked it up again in college to edit it and then a few years ago picked it up again to have it professionally edited. •September 1, 2021• SOV Football The Redskins football team could not find its first win in more than four years against Nokomis at Victory Field Friday night. Out of the two Redskins, Nokomis came out on top 54-0. Nokomis lead 33-0 at halftime. SOV quarterback Kyle Corkill completed 7-of-12 passes for 40 yards. Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation. Pictured (left to right) are Cameron Martin, Taylor Lilly, James Martin, Marla Martin and Angela McRill following the July 27 delivery.
