The Sullivan girls’ basketball team bounced back from its season opening loss to knock off Mt. Zion 36-35 last Tuesday and Arcola Monday.

Against Mt. Zion, with eight seconds left in the game, Lizzie Green converted two free throws to put the Redskins ahead by one point.

“We were then able to play great defense the remainder of the game to prevent Mt. Zion from scoring,” said Sullivan coach Sheri McCain.

Sullivan took a 22-12 lead into the half, but the Braves battled back to outscore the Redskins 13-5 in the third quarter. Read More

In his 14th year coaching Arthur boys’ basketball and 30th coaching Arthur teams, Dale Schuring returns all starters but one to a squad that went 9-18 last season.

But that one starter, Shandon Herschberger, who graduated, was Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond’s most powerful offensive punch.

To make up for the lost offense, Schuring knows his team will have to rebound, play hard and outwork opponents to be successful.

“We will need to be a solid team defensively that dominates the boards at both ends of the floor,” said Schuring. “We must be willing to outwork our opponents and gain an advantage by doing all the ‘dirty’ work that doesn’t get headlines or accolades.” Read More

Okaw Valley High School Basketball Looks Forward to Tougher Schedule

Okaw Valley boys’ basketball coach Brooks Inman expects his team to build on last year’s successes and overcome any shortcomings.

To try to improve on last year’s overall record of 17-13, Inman, in his third year as head coach, returns a senior heavy team with nine, along with seven letter winners.

The Timberwolves will have to replace the loss of last year’s offensive focal point Connor Cloyd, which will be difficult.

OV also will have to overcome a tougher non-conference schedule.

The Timberwolves open the season in the highly competitive Effingham St. Anthony tournament.  Read More
