Lady Timberwolves Overwhelm Rams 51-35 in Season Opener

Harlin, Orris combine for 27 points

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

The Okaw Valley Lady Timberwolves took control versus the Rams immediately on Monday night quickly getting out to an 8-2 lead in the first three minutes.

While the Rams fought back to get within two points, the hot shooting of Paige Harlin and Amy Orris was simply too much for the Rams to handle. With time expiring in the first quarter, Orris took the inbounds pass, dribbled across half court, and let the ball fly. From basically mid court, Orris hit nothing but net just as the buzzer sounded. The circus shot gave Okaw Valley all the momentum and the early 17-11 lead. Harlin and Orris combined to go 5-7 from behind the line on threes, and the Lady Timberwolves never looked back. Read More

Fourth quarter runs put ALAH on top

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

The Lady Knights recovered a briefly held lead from the second quarter in the final period Monday night to defeat Meridian 66-54 during the season opener in Macon.

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond led the Lady Hawks through most of the second quarter and only fell behind at the end of the half when Meridian sank a 3-pointer to go up 24-22. Despite Meridian then earning its biggest lead of the night at the beginning of the fourth quarter up 46-36, the Lady Knights went on a 7-point run to pull within three and then completed the come-from-behind win with an 8-0 run culminating with senior Elyse Harris’ 2-point bucket to take a 53-51 lead. Meridian would vie temporarily, responding with its own bucket to tie the game, but ALAH embarked on yet another run, this time of six straight points to take a 60-53 point lead. Mycaela Miller and Kim Davis then closed out the game with six points between the two scored from the line. Read More

Sights already set on next year

by Ariana Cherry
Arthur/Sullivan Reporter

About two months ago, students from multiple communities came together to form the first marching band in five years at Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond High School. While many had been accustomed to playing different tunes, in the end, it all became a melody that created a musical masterpiece.

“The students from the four communities all came together to work toward a common goal that resulted in a real sense of camaraderie,” noted Richard Moma, the ALAH High School band director. “The memories that were created from competing were those that resulted in working hard together as a cohesive unit and then realizing that all members of the group are important contributors to the overall successes and sometimes failures of the band.” Read More

Decatur sectional proves to be one of the toughest in class 1A

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

As announcer Matt Piescinski described at the beginning of Saturday’s sectional cross country meet, Decatur is very much the focal point of the sport in Illinois, with several of the state’s top teams, particularly in class 1A, all within range.

That was certainly the case Saturday as eight teams between girls and boys ranked in the top 10 were on display including St. Teresa, Monticello, Shelbyville, Tolono-Unity, and St. Joseph-Ogden. Trying to make a bid for state either as a team or individually, SOV’s boys and girls competed but could not climb over the top talent nor finish in the top 12. Read More

Historic Redskin season cut short in playoffs

By Matt Kracht
NP Sports Reporter

What could go wrong Saturday, did go wrong for SOV.

Noah Myer rushed for 118 yards with two touchdowns, and an opportunistic Auburn defense forced seven turnovers to advance past the SOV Redskins 36-14 in the first round of the ISHA Class 3A playoffs Saturday.

The Redskins would draw first blood but watched as the Trojans scored the next 36 points unanswered, ending one of the Redskins most successful football campaigns in recent memory. Auburn will host Carlinville next week in the second round of the ISHA playoffs. Read More

Knights ousted in first round of playoffs

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

Heading into Saturday’s first round playoff game, head coach Dale Schuring knew what he and his team would be up against: a tough, sock-em bop-em ground game from LeRoy’s 6 foot, 220 lb full back Lane Lindstrom and 6 foot-1 inch half-back Mason Beadles combined with agile quarterback Bryce Dooley, not afraid to keep the ball and run himself. And it was what Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond was going to have to contain if there was to be any chance of victory.

And though the Knights managed to corral the Panthers at times in the first half, LeRoy remained insistent in the second half and whittled ALAH down to win 54-34. Read More

Finish regular season 8-1

by Keith Stewart
keith@newsprogress.com

You could say Cinderella.

But they’d prefer businesslike.

SOV rounded out their regular season Friday night with a 54-14 drubbing of Clinton, ending the regular season 8-1 on the year and earning a share of the Central Illinois Conference championship along with Decatur St. Teresa.

Oh, and was it mentioned already that the Redskins are playoff bound–and at home?

The heap of rewards bestowed upon SOV Friday night, including the praises of the senior class, had to wait until after the game however. Finishing 8-1 on the year would prove pivotal in the playoff matchup, not to mention securing a share of that conference title. Read More
