OV Inducts Alumni Wall of Fame Member

Okaw Valley CUSD #302 inducted Robert Disney Jr., Bethany HS Class of 1994, onto the Alumni Wall of Fame
To be nominated the individual must have been a graduate of Bethany, Findlay, or Okaw Valley. Nominations were based on an individual’s contribution to society and community, the betterment of mankind or occupational/endeavor recognition.
Nominee Disney is retired from the United States Air force (1996-2017). He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Homeland Security, and a Master’s Degree in Cyber Security.
His military decorations include the following: Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Naval Achievement Medal, Air Force Combat Action Medal, and Humanitarian Medal.
Currently Disney lives in Colorado, speaks for the military and has made films for the military.
Disney was recognized at the 2019 Okaw Valley Commencement. He joins 2015 inductee Mike Cohan, 2016 inductee Ryan Fitzgerald, 2017 inductee Sam Scott, and 2018 inductee Dan Flannell.

VBS at Southern Baptist Church

Vacation Bible school is at Southern Baptist Church in Sullivan from 6-8:30 p.m. July 21-25.
“Family Night” with prizes follows VBS at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 25.
VBS has something for every age group five years through sixth grade (grade just finished).

OV Volunteer Hall of Fame

The purpose of the volunteer hall of fame for Okaw Valley Community Unit District is to recognize individuals or groups who have volunteered significant time, effort, or service to the school district or have contributed significant resources for the betterment of the school district.
The following were recognized at the 2019 Okaw Valley Commencement.
Ryan Christensen, Volunteer Coaching; Jim Underwood, Volunteer Coaching;
Craig and Lara Macklin, Band and FFA.

Cookout for Faith Retreat

Faith Lutheran Church is having a cookout on the Sullivan IGA parking lot Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will help fund the Ladies Retreat at Faith in July.

Arthur Fireworks Goes Off June 29

This Independence Day in Arthur sets the stage with an awe-inspiring pyrotechnic spectacle as the Arthur Rotary Club ignites the night with a barrage of color and sound. The 2019 Arthur Fireworks Celebration will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 29 with live bands, skydivers, powered parachutes, food vendors and kids’ activities. There will also be t-shirts for sale with the proceeds going to the men and women veterans of the Armed Forces.
An authentic Midwest experience featuring more pomp and salutes than one can imagine with thousands of shells, the Rural Patriot Rider, the not- to-be-missed Niagara Falls and the Great Wall of Fire. This display is one to be not only seen but felt and remembered.
The heavily attended and widely acclaimed display is presented to you by the Arthur Rotary Club, village of Arthur, Arthur Park District, CBM Plastics Inc., Tri-County Welding and the many generous businesses and individuals in the Arthur area. Bring out the blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy top-notch, free entertainment for the entire family.

Post 68 Gets Ready for 4th

Fund-raising efforts are underway for the American Legion Post 68 4th of July Celebration.
Fund-raising chairman Mike Keown said this year’s celebration includes the 100th anniversary of the American Legion.
Central States Fireworks of Athens, Ill. returns for the fourth year presenting the fireworks display at Wyman Park.
The Conner Family Amusements of Beardstown will provide carnival entertainment for the third year.
The 4th of July celebration has traditionally been funded by contributions from Sullivan merchants and community.
The fireworks contract is $17,000 with the city committing $7500 plus an additional $2500 from the Electric Dept. scrap program.
Justin “Bubba” Farris and his crew coordinate the parade with Terry Warren catering lunch.
It is a communitywide effort that includes Legion members, Auxiliary and Sons of American Legion leading the way with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts helping throughout the week. Appreciation goes to the Vineyard Church volunteers for parade cleanup.

Gym Williams Fish Fry

The Sullivan American Legion Gym Williams Fish Fry is Saturday, June 8 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Post 68.
Fish, baked beans, fried potatoes and cornbread will be served.
Everyone is welcome, and donations are gratefully accepted.

Free Band Concerts

Sullivan Community Band free concerts are Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 21.
Concerts will start at 6:30 p.m. at the south end of Wyman Park in Sullivan. (Rain plan is Sullivan Middle School gym).
Music to be performed includes movie music, marches, show tunes, and patriotic music. The band is comprised of musicians from Moultrie, Douglas, and Shelby counties.

Blues, Brews and BBQ

Pauly’s BBQ is catering dinner at 6 p.m., and the William Marsala Band will play at 7. Advanced tickets only.

Collage of Faith Sings in Lovington

The Collage of Faith will be singing Southern Gospel music at Lovington First Baptist Church at 6 p.m. June 30. Lovington resident Dennis Garmon is a member of this new gospel group. Admission is free.
Vacation Bible School will be held July 15 thru 19.

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
