OV Schools Set Veterans Day Event

Okaw Valley Community Unit School District invites all veterans and their family members to a Veterans Day program at Okaw Valley High School in Bethany Thursday, November 10.

A breakfast will be provided to all who attend beginning at 8:15 a.m. in the cafeteria and a short assembly will follow at 9:15 a.m. The assembly will feature the Okaw Valley School District band and chorus students. The keynote speaker will be Casey Woods, Illinois Air National Guard.

The students and staff at Okaw Valley appreciate all Veterans for their acts of courage and devotion to the ideals that have served to guide our nation.

Those able to attend should call 665-3232 for a reservation.

New Donor at Findlay Drive

Findlay American Legion volunteers welcomed a new donor to the Oct. 5 Blood Drive.

The Findlay American Legion Auxiliary fell six pints short of their goal of 19 pints at their recent American Blood Cross Blood Drive.

The drive was held at the Findlay American Legion October 5. Seventeen donors responded to the plea for blood donations.

Sierra Landreth became a first time donor. The next blood drive will be held 2-6 p.m. Tues. Dec. 6 in the Findlay American Legion Hall.

Sullivan Legion Inaugural Show

The Sullivan American Legion with the help of “Sullivan Street Machine Assn.” will hold their inaugural car-truck-motorcycle show Sunday, October 23 on the south lawn of the Sullivan American Legion.

Registration will be held 10 a.m.-noon with judging shortly after registration. Awards will be announced at 3 p.m. The first 25 entries registered will receive dash plaques. Top 20 entries will receive a plaque along with an overall “best of show”.

Food and drinks will be available in the Legion hall, and A-Sharp DJ Service will provide music for the event.

Lovington First Church Harvest

The First Christian Church of Lovington will have their Harvest Dinner and Bazaar Saturday, Nov. 5.

Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) are offering the following to raise money for the project within the church.

Cinnamon roll and coffee served from 8-10 a.m.; bazaar shops including candy shop, Christmas shop, baked goods shop and crafts shop are open from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-7 p.m.

Silent auction is from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4 p.m. with final bids up to 6 p.m.

Harvest dinner (turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, vegetable, salads, rolls and dessert) served from 5-7 p.m.

Opportunities to donate to after school programs for kids, vacation Bible school, general expenses and community causes will also be available.

Dove Candlelight Ceremony

Dove invites you to join them for the 16th Annual Candlelighting Ceremony. At this service, we will mourn those who have suffered and died through domestic violence and celebrate with the survivors and those working to end the abuse. This ceremony takes place in October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The ceremony will be held Thursday, October 27, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church, 216 W. Jefferson, Sullivan. The service will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will include remarks from coordinator Mary Hughes, music, and the lighting of the candles.

Mo. Co. Public Voting Test

Moultrie County Clerk Georgia England has announced that the public test of the Unisyn OVO (Optical Scan) and OVI (Touch Screen) tabulating equipment.

The equipment will be used in the November 8 General Election will be held at 10 a.m. October 31 in the Elections Counting Center Room, First Floor of the Moultrie County Courthouse in Sullivan.

This test is open to candidates, representatives of the political parties, the press and the public.

Sullivan Schools hosts open house for Alumni

In 1916, the building currently serving as Sullivan Middle School was erected. To celebrate the 100 years of this building’s operation as part of the Sullivan School District, there will be an Alumni Open House 5-5:45 p.m. Saturday, October 8 as a precursor to the annual alumni banquet at the VFW. The building will be open for self-guided viewing for alumni to see the various changes the building has undergone in recent and not-so-recent years.

Secretary of State Closes Columbus Day

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that all offices and driver services facilities open Monday to Friday will be closed on Monday, October 10.

Facilities open Tuesday to Saturday will be closed Saturday, October 8 in observance of Columbus Day.

All office and facilities will be open for business Tuesday, October 11.

Individuals may visit the Secretary of State’s website, www.cyberdriveillinois.com, to locate the nearest driver services facility and the hours of operation.

In addition, drivers may change an address, register to become an organ and tissue donor or renew license plate stickers online.

Medicare Part D Workshop

SAIL, Soyland Access to Independent Living, will host a workshop introducing the 2017 Updates to Medicare Part D 1-2:30 p.m.

Tuesday, October 11 at Mid-Illinois Senior Center Services, Inc. located at 114 E. Jefferson Street in Sullivan.

The presenter is Kathi Shackles, Mid-Illinois Senior Services Inc., Senior Health Insurance Program Volunteer. The workshop is free; reservations are not required.  For more information call Betty Watkins, SAIL Rural Outreach Coordinator, at 774-4322.

On Route 133 between Lovington and Arthur, power poles fell as a result of the storm systems that hit central Illinois in two waves on Wednesday, June 17th. These storms left many without power and caused widespread damage throughout the area, including confirmed tornado touchdowns in nearby counties.
