Back to School Immunization Clinics

The Moultrie County Health Department will be holding three back to school immunization clinics this month. On Tuesday, September 20 from 10 am to 12 pm and 3 to 6 pm, Wednesday, September 21 from 1 to 4 pm and Wednesday, September 28 from 1 to 4 pm. Call 217-728-4114 to schedule your student’s appointment. If you need an appointment to fit your schedule those can be scheduled as well. More information can be found at moultriehealth.org. The health department is located at 202 S. Main Street, Sullivan.

Phipps Named to Dean’s List

Mason Phipps has been named to the summer dean’s list at Missouri State University. For undergraduate students, criteria include enrollment in at least six credit hours during the summer semester and at least a 3.50 GPA (on a 4.00 scale).

“The Nixon Sandwich And The Tonight Show Stories”. Stories about the day Richard Nixon spoke to thousands at Sullivan’s Buffalo Celebration during his Presidential campaign in 1960 will be presented by Steve Jenne on Thursday, Sept 15 at 7 p.m. at the Moultrie County History Center at 1303 Hamilton St., Sullivan. Jenne, of Springfield, formerly of Sullivan, was a Boy Scout acting as security during one of the biggest events in Sullivan’s history. He picked up Nixon’s half-eaten sandwich, took it home and put it in the freezer. Many years later, Jenne and the sandwich appeared on the “The Tonight Show” and “I Got a Secret” in New York, among other venues. “The Sandwich that Changed My Life”, a book by Scot England,well-known biographer to the stars and former Moultrie resident, will be available. The public is invited to attend and share memories about that big day.

Drive Through Fish Dinner

The Clarence Bixler American Legion Post 409 in Findlay will be having a drive through fish dinner on Monday, September 12 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Cost for the dinner is $12.

Memory Loss Program

On Tuesday, September 13 at 6 pm at the Effingham Public Library, Shannon Nosbisch of Effingham Area Alzheimer’s Awareness will talk about memory loss. Information to be shared includes the difference between normal aging, confusion caused by treatable medical conditions and memory loss/cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Other topics that will be discussed include how to seek a diagnosis, what to expect at your visit and why it is important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible and what researchers and doctors say is the best way to reduce your chances of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia. Branden Featherling of Sullivan recently graduated from the South Plains College Law Enforcement Academy. He was the class valedictorian and the recipient of the Top Show Marksmanship Award.

Cruise Night on the Square

The Sullivan Street Machine Association will hold Cruise Night on the Square in Sullivan on Saturday, September 3 starting at 3 pm. All makes, models and years welcome. There will be live music, free popcorn provided by Boy Scout Troop 39 and dash plaques for the first 100 registered. There will also be a power wheels demo derby for ages 3 to 9 starting at 6 pm. McLaughlin Named to Dean’s List

Paige McLaughlin, of Sullivan, was named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester of the 2021-22 academic year at Illinois Wesleyan University. McLaughlin is a junior majoring in English - Writing. McLaughlin was among 743 students from 30 states and 17 countries named to the Spring 2022 Dean’s List. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must earn a GPA of 3.50 or better during the semester, based on 4.0 for straight As.
