Local FD Warns About Field Fires this Fall

Fall 2014 is quickly approaching.
We have been very fortunate in the past years, even when faced with little precipitation, not to have a large number of ground cover or field fires. These types of fires can start in many ways and have a large dollar loss depending on the vegetation that is consumed by fire. Everyone from the common homeowner to the farmer should be aware of this possibility and take precautions to keep it from happening and have a plan to control or get assistance if it does. Read More

Sullivan FFA Members Travel to Washington, D.C.

Sullivan FFA members Keegan Kruckeberg and Brodie Scribner attended the FFA Washington Leadership Conference this past summer.
One of the objectives of the conference was to have FFA members learn to be stronger advocates for their State and Federal government, as well as their own FFA chapters and schools. During this part of the training, Kruckeberg and Scribner had the opportunity to meet with Illinois State Senator Dick Durbin at the Capitol. Read More

C.E.F.S. Utility Assistance Program Starting Soon

The C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation will begin taking applications for the 2015 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on Tuesday September 2, 2014. This is also the first day that appointments can be made for the program. September and October are priority months reserved for those households that have either a member aged 60 and above or disabled. Appointments can be made by contacting the local C.E.F.S. Waterfowl Hunting Opportunities at Lake Shelbyville

Okaw Wetland offers 10 waterfowl blinds that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis 7 days a week only during the 2014 Early Goose and Teal waterfowl-hunting seasons. The blinds have not been brushed; maintenance to the blinds will take place when time and resources are available. Current water level is significantly low at this time to allow for optimal planting and growing conditions for waterfowl plantings. Hunting hours will be 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset for goose and sunrise to sunset for teal. Read More

LLC to Host Presentation on K-12 Learning Standards

The Lake Land College Learning Resource Center (LRC) is hosting two discussions regarding recent changes to K-12 curriculum and the resources available to students, faculty and community members in order to better understand these new standards.
The sessions will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17 from noon until 1 p.m. in the Luther Student Center Theater on campus in Mattoon. The second session will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 12:15-1 p.m. at the Kluthe Center in Effingham, room 201. Read More

Lake Shelbyville Water Safety Tips for Labor Day Holiday

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville is urging those who will be spending the Labor Day weekend on or around water to follow these safety tips.

Before heading out for the lake or river, be sure to have a life jacket on hand for everyone. The life jackets should be U.S. Coast Guard approved, the correct size and fit, and appropriate for the activity planned. On average, nine out of 10 people who drowned at a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake or river project didn’t wear a life jacket. Life jackets save lives by keeping the wearer afloat and providing time for rescue. Read More
