Labor Picnic to Honor Union Members

Soil Moisture Levels Increased in Southern Illinois with Weekend Rains

Rose’s measure to Help Transition Laid-off Workers Back to Employment

New law inspired by local community colleges

A new law spearheaded by State Senator Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) to create a two-year pilot program to help transition laid-off workers back to work has recently been signed into law by the governor.

“I want to extend a debt of gratitude to our local community college presidents for bringing this idea to me during a meeting at Richland Community College in Decatur. The new law will get people back to work,” Rose said. Read More

Fleming Earns FRED Scholarship

Moultrie Independent Telephone Company recently awarded Aaron Fleming, a junior at Millikin University and a 2012 graduate of Lovington High School, a $1,500 academic scholarship funded by the Fund for Rural Education and Development, or FRED, which is a national charitable foundation located in Washington, D.C.

To receive a FRED scholarship, an applicant must be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate student with at least a 3.3 GPA and be nominated by a FRED member telecommunications company. The FRED organization seeks to reward academic achievement and leadership in school and community activities in young people across rural America. Read More

OV Boosters Kick Year Off with Kickball Tourney

Fenton Receives C.E.F.S. Educational Scholarship

Samantha Fenton of Sullivan has received a certificate of recognition and a monetary award to pursue educational training. Fenton is currently a Certified Nurse Assistant and plans to further her career in the medical field and become a Licensed Practical Nurse by attending Lake Land College. C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation Board of Directors recently awarded $8,000 in educational scholarships to 12 individuals who are pursuing post secondary education.

The educational scholarships were made available through funding provided by the Community Services Block Grant Program from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Read More

Arthur’s Annual Rat Race to Benefit Students of New School District

It’s Back.

The Arthur Cheese Festival’s Rat Race 5K & 10K runs are taking place on Labor Day Monday, September 1 and as in the past, proceeds from this annual race organized by the Arthur Woman’s Club will be used to fund educational scholarships to graduating high school seniors.

But starting this year, that means seniors in the newly formed high school district, Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond, will all benefit from this race and may apply for scholarships in the spring.  Read More
