According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the Lake Shelbyville tree stand policy for this season will remain the same as it was last season. The policy allows hunters to leave one seasonal tree stand up for the duration of the archery season. Seasonal tree stands may be put up two weeks prior to the beginning of archery season. Opening day is October 1. Tree stands must be taken down two weeks after archery season ends on Jan.18. A roving tree stand may be left up for a period not to exceed 72 hours – the length of a three day weekend. Read More
The Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation, in collaboration with the Douglas County Health Department and Lake Land College, will provide a free day of dental care for Illinois children age 5 and younger as part of its Dentist By 1 program Saturday, Sept. 13 in Mattoon. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to schedule free exams, which can satisfy the mandatory dental screening for kindergarten. Read More
The Lake Shelbyville, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host Aquafest noon-4 p.m. Saturday, August 2. Children and adults of all ages are welcome to attend. The beach fee will be waived for the entire day to allow all beach users a chance to come out and enjoy the free games and activities which include snow cones, inflatable water slides, bounce houses, water safety games, and an appearance from Bobber the Water Safety Dog. The Allenville Christian Church will celebrate their 130th anniversary of ministry Aug. 16. This small country church is located in the village of Allenville and was first organized in 1884.
The Okaw Valley Orchard will be the site for a Hummingbird Festival scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Sunday, July 27. In years past dozens of hummingbirds have been present to “wow” festival visitors. Vernon Kleen, a licensed hummingbird bander and associated with the Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders, will begin the festival at 1 p.m. with a short discussion about hummingbirds and explain why they are banded. After the discussion, hummingbirds will be captured and banded. Read More
The annual Findlay Walleye Festival will begin at 4 p.m. Friday with the walleye tent opening at the firehouse. Entertainment will also commence at 4 p.m. and run through midnight. Inflatables for children will be available. Read More
