Hullabaloo September 15

New Life Church in Sullivan will host  Hullabaloo 2-5 p.m. Sept. 15. The event offers free entertainment for families, and vendors will sell food and beverages. 

Activities will include laser tag, carnival games, contests, a cupcake walk, and inflatables such as bungee run, obstacle course, and a new feature “The Wrecking Ball.” There will also be candy, prizes, face painting, rock climbing and more.

Hullabaloo, sponsored by New Life Church and several local businesses, will host the event on the square. It has been a huge success year after year, and local law enforcement estimates that more than 1,000 people will attend. Read More

Road Closed Sept. 17, 18

A portion of 1545 CR 1900 N on Cadwell Road will be closed next Tuesday and Wednesday, particularly at the intersection of the Union Pacific Railroad crossing. Crews will be replacing the crossing.

Save on Plate Sticker

Mid-Illinois Senior Services, Inc. will host clinics 9-11:30 a.m. Sept. 18 at Marrowbone Public Library in Bethany and 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 20 in the Lovington Public Library on the BEAM applications, a program formerly known as the Circuit Breaker, to aid senior citizens in obtaining discounts on their license plate stickers.   Read More

Shimkus Accepting Applications for Military Academies

Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) is now accepting applications from young men and women interested in attending one of the United States military academies. High school seniors, college students, and anyone interested should apply now for summer 2014 admission.

“As the school year begins, many students are thinking about what’s next. As a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, I am eager to provide information and assistance with nominations to the military academies,” Shimkus stated.

To be eligible for appointment, you must be a United States citizen; at least 17 and not more than 23 years of age on July 1, 2014; unmarried; not pregnant; have no dependents; and a legal resident of the 15th Congressional District of Illinois. Average acceptable ACT scores are 24 in English/reading and 25 in math.

Fun Run Set to Benefit Little Theatre

The Little Theatre On The Square will host their first fundraiser fun run at 5 p.m. Saturday, September 28 with an after party immediately following until midnight. 

Kaleidoscope: Dart for the Arts is a 5K walk or run where participants will be splashed with colored powder throughout the trail. Sign-up and on-site registration will begin at 3 p.m. at the Sullivan Civic Center with a 5 p.m. run start.

Mod II GED Classes at Lake Land College

Lake Land College Adult Education has redesigned its GED preparation classes into six-week modules for the fall 2013 semester. Mod II runs from September 30 – November 8 and Mod III from November 11 – December 20.

With the new format of the classes, it is important that students attend an orientation session to complete all intake paper work and pre-class assessments.

Youth Deer Hunt Applications Available

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville will hold the 5th Annual Youth Firearm Deer Hunt October 12 and 13. To apply for the hunt, youth must be less than 16 years old on October 12 and be accompanied by an adult on the hunt. The youth must also purchase a 2013 youth either sex deer permit, which may be purchased at any over-the-counter licensed vendor starting in September.  Read More

Locals Announce Candidacies

Several Moultrie County residents have announced their candidacy for the March 18, 2014 primaries.

On the Republican ticket, current Chief Deputy Sheriff Chris Sims will be running for Moultrie County sheriff. County board incumbents Arlene Aschermann, Todd Maxedon, and Dave McCabe will also be running.

On the Democratic ticket, incumbent treasurer Marci Thompson will seek re-election, as will incumbent county clerk Georgia England. Incumbent county board member Gary Smith will also seek another term.

The NP will print an update to the list of candidates running come December, and again in January, to include any write-in candidates. If running send your info to Keith Stewart at keith@newsprogress.com or call at 728-7381.

Student Council Spaghetti Supper Friday

The SHS Student Council will host a spaghetti supper this Friday before the Redskins’ home football game. Dinner will be served in the high school commons from 4:30-7 p.m. Dinner includes a salad, spaghetti, bread, dessert, and a drink. Tickets may be purchased in advance from any student council member or at the door. Take-out meals are also available. The spaghetti supper is the student council’s largest fundraiser of the year with profits going toward homecoming, fun night, and state convention costs.
