SHS Alumni Awards

Submitted Who's Who Award Stanley Dolan, 89, a 1941 SHS graduate, was the recipient of this year’s Who’s Who Award. Dolan was presented and introduced by his son Dave. The WWII vet grew up on a farm near Sullivan and attended a one room school house. Dolan went on to work at Taber Grain/ADM and has served along with his wife Mary Margaret as the overseers of the New Life Ministry Center. Who's Who Award

Stanley Dolan, 89, a 1941 SHS graduate, was the recipient of this year’s Who’s Who Award. Dolan was presented and introduced by his son Dave. The WWII vet grew up on a farm near Sullivan and attended a one room school house. Dolan went on to work at Taber Grain/ADM and has served along with his wife Mary Margaret as the overseers of the New Life Ministry Center. Submitted Hall of Fame Recipient David Walter Whitaker, SHS class of 1980, was this year’s recipient of the Hall of Fame honor. Whitaker was presented and introduced by his sister Pam Whitaker Buckalew. Whitaker, who’s early interest and passion was in Future Farmers of America, went on to earn an undergraduate degree in agricultural science at the University of Illinois followed by a master’s degree in plant breeding from the University of Minnesota. Whitaker then went on to fulfill a successful career as a research scientist, developing different hybrid seeds. Whitaker has earned several awards for his work over the years including, but not limited to, the 2008 co-recipient of the Pioneer Hybrid of the Year, 2010 Pioneer Inbred of the Year, co-recipient of the 2013 DuPont Bolton/Carothers Innovative Science Award, and the International Hybrid of the Year Award by Pioneer in 2008. Art Club Workshop Saturday

The fourth Sullivan Art Club workshop will be held on 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, October 19. The presenter, artist Becky Marcussin, will lead and guide participants in the use of pastels. Marcussin holds a B.A. and M.A. in studio art from Eastern Illinois University. She has begun her 17th year as an adjunct faculty member at Lake Land College in Mattoon. In addition, she teaches in her studio and at ARC. Read More

McElroy Featured at Kidsfest in Sullivan Tues.

Food Drive at Oktoberfest This Weekend

Members of the public may drop off canned goods at the United Way Tent on the square during Oktoberfest 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The first 40 people to donate 10 lbs of food or a $10 donation will receive a chili cook-off ticket.

Sporting Clay Shoot To Benefit Lincolnland Hospice

Twin Oaks Sporting Clays is hosting its inaugural Hospice Shoot at 9 am Saturday, October 12, at its range in Mode. Sponsorship funds will benefit Lincolnland Hospice, which provides care to people in 20 counties in east central and southern Illinois, regardless of their ability to pay. Lincolnland Hospice also provides comprehensive bereavement services to all community members. Read More

Landmark torn down



News Progress


The home at the intersection of Route 133 and Route 32 in Lovington was torn down last week. The house had become a major hazard after a box truck struck it, taking out a large portion of the north wall. The owners had the home demolished after it was deemed a public safety issue.
