Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford Reacts to Moody’s Downgrade on More Illinois Universities

“As state leaders continue to put off work on necessary pension reform, Moody’s Investors Service has more bad news for Illinois,” said Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford. Moody’s has downgraded $1.56 billion of debt issued by the University of Illinois, and lowered the ratings on six other state universities including Illinois State University, Southern Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, Northeastern Illinois University and Governors State University.  Read More

Soil Moisture Continues to Decline in Illinois

Soil moisture continued to decline across Illinois with levels at two inches, 27 percent lower on August 15 than those from July 15, according to Jennie Atkins, Water and Atmospheric Resources Monitoring (WARM) Program Manager at the Prairie Research Institute, Illinois State Water Survey, University of Illinois.

Soil moisture in the state averaged 0.17 water fraction by volume (wfv) at depths of two inches on August 15, which is significantly lower than the historical average of 0.25 wfv. Levels dropped throughout the state with central Illinois having the lowest numbers, averaging 0.14 wfv or just at the wilting point for most soils measured. Read More

Eighth Annual Okaw Coop Meeting Thursday Aug.22

The eighth annual meeting of the member and shareholders of the Okaw Farmers Cooperative, Inc. will be held on Thursday, August 22 at the Yoder's Kitchen Restaurant in Arthur.

A dinner will be served between 4:30-6:30 p.m. preceding the business meeting, which will begin at approximately 7 p.m.

Tony Brown, president of the board of directors of Okaw Farmers Cooperative will outline goals for the company's future.

Jeff Myers, general manager, will discuss the operations of the company.

Memorial Benefit for Leonard Saturday

This Saturday, a memorial benefit for the late Mike Leonard will be held at the Sullivan VFW.

A hog roast and DJ services by Tiger Rose Productions will be featured. The meal will begin at 4:30 p.m. and include pulled pork, potato salad, baked beans, and chips and dessert. An auction featuring a STIHL electric weedeater, tools, collectable toys, porcelain dolls, and other items, will be conducted by Dave's Family Auctions and a 50/50 drawing and raffle will also be featured.

Proceeds will go to the family to help offset unpaid expenses following Leonard's unexpected passing May 19.
